Question
Is there a good or appropriate bedtime for a 13 year old? I know he should be able to start managing his time but trying to find balance with that is tough and he needs sleep!
Answer
It's best to think about the hours of sleep your teen needs and then decide together the school night bedtime based on that number.
Teens his age need 8-10 hours of sleep in a 24 hour cycle.
For a couple of weeks work together on finding the exact hours that help him feel rested.
Then do the math of school night bedtime based on those hours and when he has to wake up to go to school.
On weekends, count the hours on his natural sleep pattern. Most teens his age stay up to play games and meet friends online. They may go to sleep late and then naturally sleep longer on a weekend morning. That is common for this age group. If you don't have any early morning activities set up, my recommendation is to let that brain of his sleep.
Here's great information from the CDC on sleep and teens- I highly recommend the bedtime calculator
