Question
We may move to El Salvador and it's not one of the safest places on Earth, so to speak.
What is the best way to explain to a 4.5 and a 5.5 years old that we'll have to do some things differently without scaring them?
For instance: today I was explaining to them that we'll need them to only speak Italian or Portuguese to us when we are in crowded areas like a market or a mall and not to speak english, in some areas and also with strangers, and only speak english when we are alone or with friends. Of course Bella asked why and I was caught off guard
Answer
The answer needs to be simple and age appropriate. Something as simple as, "In El Salvador Italian and Portuguese will help us stay safe when we are out in public. Just like holding hands when crossing the road keeps you safe"
Keep it simple and they will have less questions.
