Question
At the end of last school year, my 8yo son was diagnosed with mild adhd.
We have the report and sent it to his third grade teacher.
Is there anything official that we need to do with the school so it is recorded and he is allowed certain modifications?
One of the comments from the teacher is that when he is done with his work he bangs his table pretty loud (next door classroom can hear it) because he doesn’t want to wait for others to finish. The teacher says it is very disruptive. This is also one reason he is not allowed to be in the homework club. Any ideas where we can find school approved things he can do while he waits for others to finish their work?
Answer
If he is in a public or charter school you need to start the process of getting him an IEP: Individualized Education Plan
Search on Google “Parent to Parent Miami” and have them guide you through the process.
Tell the teacher that his banging on the desk is his lack of impulse control which is a symptom of ADHD - btw there’s no such thing as “mild” ADHD so expecting him not to do that is silly.
Tell the teacher to give him a task to help her when he is done with his work - this will build his esteem and empathy, let him read a book or color - this will give his brain a different task and/or to quietly go to him and tell him to go take a walk and get his wiggles out outside of the classroom.
He needs a replacement and guidance in how to wait.
