Carrollton School of the Sacred Heart: Defining Social Emotional Development and the Mental Health of Your Children

  • Stop Parenting Alone Miami, FL (map)

Most people are aware that a toddler will walk anywhere between their tenth to their eighteenth month. Everyone is born with bones and muscles and that is what helps us walk. However, if a toddler doesn’t practice tummy time, crawling, pulling up and toddling on the furniture they may not walk or they may be delayed in walking. The same is true for social emotional development. We are born with the ability to build social emotional tools like emotional tolerance, working memory, self-control, and flexible thinking but if the human does not practice and is taught the specifics of these tools the social emotional competencies will not develop, or they will be atrophied. The social emotional competencies of self-management, self-awareness, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision are developed somewhere in a persons mid to late twenties. Parents, teachers, friends, culture, and lived experiences all influence the development of these competencies. Are you prepared? In this talk:

• Learn about the social emotional competencies.

• Learn how to assist your child in developing them.

• Leave with an understanding on how to help your child thrive socially and emotionally
